Omak, WA

Shanon W. Love, 68, a lifetime resident of Omak, WA, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2012, at his home with family by his side. He was born on July 17, 1943, in Tucson, AZ to parents, Warren and Maxine (Bowe) Love. He grew up and attended schools in Omak, graduating from high school in 1961. In 1966, he married the love of his life, Bobbie McCracken, in Omak. Shanon worked for Al Gariano Painting during this time. Later, he worked for Alan Gann Construction for 23 years. In 1996, he started his own painting business with his son, Todd. He retired in 2008. Shanon loved working with his hands in his own shop, creating furniture and various projects for family and friends. He loved his family unconditionally and was always there when needed to lend a hand and make repairs. Everyone who knew him knows of his love for skiing and he spent many hours tuning and repairing the skis for family and his many friends. Shanon was on the Loup Loup Ski Patrol for 40 years and in 2009, was the first volunteer to receive the Ralph Parks Memorial Award for his service.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bobbie, at the family home; one son, Todd Love; and his mother, Maxine Love, both of Omak; one sister, Nancy (Jerry) Sparks of Snohomish; one brother, Kevin (Lynn) Love of Wenatchee; two nieces, Andrea Love of Seattle and Emily Love of Wenatchee; one nephew, Matt Skipper of Lynnwood; and numerous aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Warren; and one niece, Sarah Skipper.

A Private Family Gathering was held on Saturday, January 21, 2012 in Omak. A Public Celebration of his Life will be held in late spring at the Loup Loup Ski Hill, to be announced at a later date. The family requests memorial donations be made in Shanon's name to the Loup Loup Ski Education Foundation, P.O. Box 768, Okanogan, WA 98840 or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are by Precht-Harrison-Nearents Funeral Home.

Greetings Fellow 'Trollers!

Thanks to those who have emailed itching to Patrol. I trust we're all having a fun and busy summer. It certainly is getting time to start planning the season, so...here we go.

Summer Get Together: Let's plan SUNDAY AUGUST 28 at THE SKI AREA. 3:00 PM. Let's plan a meeting and BBQ. I'll put together a formal agenda, but the main topics to discuss will be below (Swap planning, Refresher planning, Hill protocols/guidelines). We can divvy BBQ duties as the date nears.

Sports Swap: October 29 is the date.

Refresher Planning: November 12 & 13. By now everyone should have received your Ski Patrol Magazine/ Refresher Guide in the mail. If you haven't you should be able to download it off the NSP web site. A gentle reminder to all; our refresher is usually the LAST one in the region. If you don't think you can attend it you will need to attend another patrol's. Plan now. Saturday the 12th will be all OEC. Sunday the 13th will be Lift Evac and the updated CPR refresher. We now have 4 of us certified as CPR instructors.

Roster: Times change, people change. If anyone thinks they're not going to rejoin our elite ranks this coming season, let me or Marke know. I'm not sure if we're planning an OEC class or not this year. We'll need to see what kind of interest and need we have. Anyway, if you know of someone who is seriously interested in our fine organization, let us know.

Missing iPhone found

We had some fun looking for Casey's iPhone which was missing from his jacket pocket. On the apple website, there's a gps tool to "find your phone". We used a laptop at the top shack to narrow down our search area to the top of the hill, then went outside to call the number. About 7 patrollers were spread out poised to listen. No noise, but something was vibrating in his pants pocket. Doh.

Getting closer to opening

There will be a OEC Mid Term for our candidates this Sunday. 8:30 AM up at the hill. We could use a few hands. Let Kurt or Alex know.

Tentative opening date is 12/17, unless Mother Nature decides to give it up sooner. Should we get a good dump before then calls will be made, emails sent, and we'll fire things up. Stay tuned!

Instructor Refresher Planning Meeting 6:30 Weds

As everyone knows it takes more than a handful of people to put on our annual refresher (scheduled for 11/13). Those of us who will be running the stations will need to have our refresher prior to the Patrol refresher. The Instructor Refresher will be November 7, Sunday at the Ski Area, 8:30 AM. We are going to need at least 6 patrollers to run some skill stations and help out. Please contact Alex ( 923-1907 ) or me ASAP. We are going to have a planning session on Wed. 10/13 at the Twisp River Pub at 6:30 PM to develop an outline and plan. All are welcome.

At our annual meeting we discussed having a class to get a few more instructors on board. Not just OEC, but Ski & Toboggan or any other discipline. The first step to that is the Instructor Development Class. This will give you the basics needed for teaching. Opportunity is knocking! A class has been scheduled for Tues. & Wed. Oct.19 & 20. 6:30 PM. Location will be either Twisp or the Ski Area depending on who signs up.

Hello All,

It has been decided. Our annual meeting and elections will be held SUNDAY, AUGUST 29. Meeting will start at 3:00 PM at the hill followed by a BBQ. Please mark you calendars and plan to attend. Per our by laws, this is an election year and we will be voting on terms for Director, Asst. Director and Secretary/Treasurer. I will have an agenda put together in the next week. Primarily consisting of a budget review, Ski Swap planning, Elections, and hill assignments (Hill Capts., Committee Chairs). If there is a pressing topic you would like to add, let me know. I will also send out Proxies. If you absolutely can't make it (i.e. you died) please make sure someone has your proxy so we can have a quorum. I'll be in touch with some of you regarding a nominating committee.

Hope everyone's summer is going well. I look forward to seeing the gang and to winter as well since we're going to see temps in the upper 90's this week!

Hello All,

Ron Wilson asked me to let everyone know there will be a study session for any interested patrollers this WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11 AT 6:00 pm, HOMETOWN PIZZA. The idea is to review the OEC cycle topics for our refresher. If anyone from the Methow side wants to do the same I'd be happy to send out a notice or someone can reply to all.

As far as the refresher goes, we are planning to START AT 8:00 AM at THE HILL. Plan to register, have your coffee and hob nob between 7:00 and 8:00. The sooner we get going, the sooner we can finish up. Sunday we'll start at 9:00 AM. A little patrol biz then Lift Evac refresher. Be There. We'll plan a CPR date early Dec.

For the refresher, do bring a lunch and dress for outdoors. We could use some extra help in the victim department. Candidates? Spouses? This is a great way to see how things are done. Let me know.

A big tip of the patrol cap to everyone who put in their time at the Swap. We didn't break any records but we made enough $ to keep our training budget and supply coffers in the black. I encourage everyone to come up with some ideas to make our event more profitable, unique, efficient, attractive , whatever!

The Loup Loup Ski Patrol is currently looking to increase it's ranks. We are planning to begin our Outdoor Emergency Care training by the beginning of October. If you are a strong, advanced to expert skier or boarder who wants to join our team, please call Kurt Oakley, Patrol Director at 509-997-1600 or email info@skitheloup.com .

Requirements

Be a strong, advanced or expert skier/boarder
Be at least 16 years of age
Join the National Ski Patrol (www.nsp.org)
Complete one season as a "candidate"
Successfully complete the Outdoor Emergency Care course including CPR*

*The OEC course is scheduled to begin late Sept./early Oct. It is an online course which generally runs 6-8 weeks. Assignments are completed by email. There will be 5 day long sessions of "hands on" practical training as well, plus a mid term and final exam.

Maintain an average of one duty day a week plus participation with our annual Ski Swap and training sessions.
Play well with others and enjoy snow & cold!

Benefits

1st year: Free lift ticket while "on duty/training".
2nd year: (1st year as patroller) Free season pass plus half price pass for immediate family.
3rd year: Free season pass for patroller and immediate family

Thanks to Tom Halpin, Chris Stern, Sharla & yours truly we now have the coolest floor of any ski patrol shack. We were able to get the inside windows trimmed out and almost all the shingles up. At this point, there really isn't enough to do to call for a work party on Sunday. I'll put out another email looking for a get together when we get a few more materials. Welcome to the Loup Loup Ski Patrol. The Patrol is a group of over 40 volunteers whose mission is to provide a safe recreational environment and render aid & transport to anyone needing assistance. We are all members of the National Ski Patrol System and are trained in the Outdoor Emergency Care program. Our goal is to help out and have fun! When you visit the Loup be sure to stop in and check out our new building (built by the patrol) at the top of the chairlift. If you need assistance or just have a question, ask! That's why we're here.
